MATCH REPORT

Bristol City 2–1 Barnes Stormers

FULL TIME

City began their 2026/27 League Eight campaign with a deserved 2–1 victory over Barnes Stormers at Clapham Common, finally getting the better of an opponent who have proved frustrating in previous meetings.

After a goalless first half, City had come closest to breaking the deadlock when James Hayes smashed an effort against the crossbar, but it was Barnes who struck first early in the second half. Their attacker turned his way inside several City defenders before curling a lovely finish into the far corner.

It was the only time Ennys was beaten all afternoon, with the City goalkeeper producing a number of fantastic saves throughout the game to keep his side within touching distance.

City’s response wasn’t long in coming. A lovely one-two between Hayes and skipper Alfie Hill-Kitcherside released Alfie down the flank, with his cross finding Jack Smith. Smithy laid the ball back into the path of Hayes, who cut inside before finishing into the bottom corner with his left foot to make it 1–1.

Having been denied by the crossbar in the first half, Hayes finally had the goal his performance deserved.

With around 15 minutes remaining, City completed the turnaround. Nick Bellamy plucked a high ball out of the sky before laying it into the path of Jack Lowe, and the Fine Master let fly from distance with an effort that somehow found its way beyond the Barnes goalkeeper to put City 2–1 ahead.

Both sides had opportunities to add to the scoreline during a lively finish, but there were to be no further goals. Barnes’ task was made even harder late on when one of their players picked up two yellow cards in the space of a minute and was given his marching orders.

City saw out the remaining minutes to secure all three points and, after failing to beat Barnes in their previous meetings, start life in League Eight with a win.
