Three Little Birds FC 3–0 Bristol City
Three Little Birds FC 3-0 Bristol City London Supporters Club
Bristol City London Supporters Club produced a spirited display in difficult circumstances but were ultimately punished by clinical finishing as Three Little Birds ran out 3-0 winners, with the scoreline proving harsher than City's performance deserved.
What was already set to be a tough afternoon became even more challenging before kick-off, with a number of late withdrawals, including City's goalkeeper, forcing a reshuffle. Nicko and Memo stepped in admirably between the posts and both produced a series of fine saves to keep City in contention throughout. Nicko even survived an early scare when he appeared to handle outside the area, but with birthday luck on his side the referee waved play on.
On a rock-hard surface that made fluent football difficult, City were organised and disciplined from the outset. The back three of Sayer, Hayes and Louis dealt well with much of Three Little Birds' attacking threat, while midfield battles were fiercely contested, with Sam Rodgerson on the receiving end of several heavy challenges.
Despite City's resilience, the breakthrough arrived midway through the first half. A ball played in behind the defence found space down the right flank and the resulting cross was expertly side-footed home by the hosts' prolific number nine to give Three Little Birds the lead.
Clear-cut opportunities were scarce for both sides, but City almost found an equaliser before the interval. A long ball into the area caused panic among the home defence, only for Ryan Hayes to see his effort drift narrowly wide of the post.
City emerged for the second half with renewed energy. Witse and Yeremi led the press superbly, winning numerous duels and pinning Three Little Birds back for long periods. The visitors enjoyed their best spell of the game and came closest to levelling when Nikita met a corner with a powerful header that flashed just wide.
As City committed players forward in search of an equaliser, the game began to open up. Three Little Birds squandered several opportunities before eventually finding a second goal through their number nine, much to City's frustration after a series of appeals for fouls in the build-up were dismissed.
Any hopes of a late comeback disappeared with almost the final kick of the game. After another challenge on Bellamy went unpunished, a spectacular 30-yard strike flew beyond the helpless Memo to seal the victory and give the final scoreline an emphatic appearance.
The absence of manager Jed Begley, reportedly away scouting potential new signings in the nightclubs of Ibiza, was keenly felt on the touchline, although rumours suggest his recruitment strategy remains under review.
While the result was disappointing, City can take encouragement from a committed and determined performance under difficult circumstances. Attention now turns to a return to Clapham Common, where they face Higham Park Rangers in the cup looking to bounce back in familiar surroundings.
